What are you feeding your soul?

My son has taken a keen interest in cooking. One particular day we decided to make cookies. As we were following the recipe and he was getting the ingredients;  I soon became aware that my son was asking me continuously where the ingredients were located in the kitchen. I had to tell him where each item was, at times he would even argue stating it wasn’t there or he couldn’t see it.

This made me think of how we can be like that with the Word of God. My son lives in our home and has full access to what’s in it at any time yet he did not know if we had vanilla essence, where the eggs were in the pantry , if we had wholemeal flour.

The same is true for us,  we are believers and we have the Word of God fully accessible to us but we are not always aware of it, neither do we choose to go to it for what we need. We can underestimate it’s purpose and effectiveness in our lives and even be unaware of it’s contents.

Instead we take  shortcuts which often include asking others (friends,  loved ones, social media)  for what we should be getting directly ourselves from the Word.

Hebrews 4:12 states: “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”

May I encourage us to make reading the Word a priority this year. God has given us His Word and it has great benefits for us :
– we receive peace
– we receive wisdom
– God becomes more real in our lives
– it increases our confidence in Him
– we model it for our children.

The Word feeds us:
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)

The Word washes us:
“That He might sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing of the water in the word.” (Ephesians 5:26)

The Word educates us:
“The unfolding of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.” (Psalm 119:30 )

Our soul  is the wealthiest institution in the  world, we need to look after it and ensure we are feeding on the Word of God.
